Thing is what made dubstep special for me when i got into it like 7 years ago, was how many sub-styles it had/has, the spectrum is/was huge. You got the dub/ragga-eque side like Mungo's Hifi, radikal guru, LV etc, then Techno styles coming from martyn / 2562, then you got the tribal shit like Shackleton which i absolutely love. The Bug making grime-esque beats. Thats just a few examples of the fuckload that i could give examples of but be here all day. Which are essentially dubstep but people wanna pidgeon hole into a different categories/genres.

Unfortunately now, dubstep is only known by the masses to be the dogshit which makes it into charts / what the kids popping e's for the first time wank over, screechy horrible shit, the polar opposite of what was born of the genre and real heads know about. I can only do steppy beats, not monotonous bouncy beats like house/techno etc though, not my thing.

You're bang on about everything haha. The first time i heard Skream - Rutten about 5 or 6 years ago it just about blew my mind. I guess i was a bit late to the party but it opened this whole new exciting genre.

It was fucking awesome watching the sound progress with, like you said, all the 'sub-genres' branching off it. Shackleton - Blood on my hands and Zomby - Digital Fauna. 2 examples of 140bpm (or close to) in a totally different style, sounding so good. It's sad what happened but it's the same with any sound in the past. Just look at trance, and then the superclubs, ibiza, the top40 and so on. It's bound to happen, the great thing is there will always be a core, and always good sounds being made. That being said, the freshness of the early years (not that i was a part of it or anything, i was in my bedroom playing video games) can't be reproduced and the original 140bpm sound is difficult to create new ideas with.

There are some great producers out there still. Zomby (that track i posted is off his new album which isnt out for a month) still kicks ass. I also suggest DjRum album 'Seven Lies'.
