Mica Paris So Good Rares
In some respects, Mica Paris was the Adele of her day: a South London teenage chanteuse who turned heads with a powerfully soulful voice at odds with her tender years. This debut album from 1988 (the same year Adele was born!) remains her finest hour, placing her at the forefront of a Britsoul movement that also spawned Brand New Heavies and Heather Small, then the singer in Hot House.
Paris leisurely flits between the reserved pitch-perfect vocal diction of Dionne Warwick, as on the Bacharach-esque single My One Temptation, and the more testifying clout of Aretha Franklin, best heard on the epic title track. Today she combines a TV presenting career (What Not To Wear) with a still-busy singing schedule; she’s worked with Jools Holland and Dave Gilmour, and was recently heard on Kate Bush’s Director’s Cut album. So Good is where it all began, and the reissue comes with a bonus disc of dance mixes and non-album tracks, including a fine version of Roberta Flack & Donnie Hathaway’s Where Is The Love?, in the company of Will Downing.
